As we approach Juneteenth Freedom Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this important day.
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, marks the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for liberation, equity, and justice in our nation’s history.
In recognition of Juneteenth, STIC will observe a day off on Thursday, June 19. This is not just a way to honor a critical moment in history—it’s also a chance to reflect on the values that shape our mission: justice, inclusion, and freedom.
As an independent living center committed to the rights of people with disabilities, Juneteenth resonates deeply with our work. The fight for freedom and civil rights for Black Americans has always been connected to the broader push for justice among all marginalized communities. As Anita Cameron reminded us in her presentation last week, the disability rights movement didn’t happen in isolation, it grew alongside other civil rights movements and was shaped by their courage and conviction.
Juneteenth is also a reminder that the work isn’t over. Our fight for equity and true community inclusion for all people continues every day.
I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the meaning of Juneteenth, learn more about its history, and connect with our community. Below are some local events and resources to explore.
