Assistive Technology

…commonly refers to products, devices or equipment, whether purchased, modified or created, that are used to maintain, increase or improve the independence of individuals with disabilities.

Program Goal

To help individuals with disabilities obtain necessary assistive technology services and environmental modifications

Eligibility

Services are available to individuals of all ages with disabilities, their family members, service providers, employers, educators and others who are interested in disability issues or assistive technology.

TRAID Project Activities

As the Regional TRAID Center, we serve individuals with disabilities and community members by:

• Obtaining information on technology devices, services, and/or resources in response to customer requests.
  
  
• Providing referrals to known service provider agencies/vendors in response to customer requests.
  
  
• Providing in house at consultations to match a person with appropriate assistive technology in order to meet their needs.
  
  
• Maintaining and demonstrating examples of assistive devices, which are available for customers to try and evaluate.
  
  
• Providing training to individuals with disabilities, families, service providers, educators and employers about the values of assistive technology.
  
  
• Disseminating information on assistive technology, TRAID services and activities to customers through mailings, media, newsletters, and related events.
  
  
• Operating an Early Intervention Equipment Loan Closet and demonstration center for infants and toddlers and their families, funded by the New York State Health Department Early Intervention Program. Equipment is loaned to families and providers at no cost for temporary loan.

Revolving Door Loan Closet

Do you have equipment or products that you no longer need or use that can be used by a person with a disability? Devices as simple as a modified doorknob or walker and as complex as a voice-activated computer system are accepted as donations.

When items are donated, they are “recycled” and donated to individuals in the community who need them.

The Loan Closet is a tangible way of lending a hand to your community.

All items donated to the Revolving Door Loan Closet are given to local community members at no cost.

If you are in need of equipment, please call to inquire about the Loan Closet inventory.

All items are given away at no cost, with the exception of shower chairs/tub benches/ manual wheelchairs/ramps. A refundable deposit is required for the temporary loan of those items.

Assistive Technology Loan and Demonstration Closet Inventory

The following items are available to all community members for loan or demonstration. Loans are a free service provided by the TRAID Project and STIC. We generally ask that all items be returned after 8 weeks, however extensions can be arranged. Because a large part of this program is supported by community donations to the revolving door loan closet, our inventory often changes. If you can not find what you are looking for in this inventory list, or would like training or a consultation, please contact the TRAID Project Coordinator, Cheri Robinson at 724-2111.
